Where I see my work going
Since being at university, overtime I have written some papers that I would like to share. For instance, in my 2nd year, I wrote a paper ‘debating the sonic ethics within environmental field recording’ where I debate and evaluate whether or not the field is ethical. It delves into sonic rights, human language, with holding from recording, the implications of pressing play, what happens after we press play and what we should do to move forward. At the end of the essay, I layout a glossary in which I detail all the sonic and scientific terms used to enable the essay to be as accessible as possible.
The paper that I would most like to publish, or share is my recent dissertation where I ‘proposed a methodology to collaborate with the more-than-human through environmental field recording’. In this I explore what I’ve called a sonic dictionary which is a library of ethical terminology to be used within the field, asses the Western and non-Western history of how the field came to be, the role religion played in the separation of the human to more-than-human, the impact a Zoom H5 recorder poses following a cradle-to-grave framework, the rights of nature movement, who gives rights, the global alliance of nature, indigenous understandings of the western rights of nature, how the recordist affects the more-than-humans rights, to then bring together and explain movements that are following a more sustainable sonic approach to the field.
There are many things that I have learnt and more information that has come available to me since submitting my dissertation that I feel is necessary to include. I would also like the rewrite the structure and make it as understandable and accessible as possible. I have not found a platform yet that I would like to submit this work to, although I am interested in Atmos which had published similar things.
Here is a link to Atmos’s website :
For the booklet that I have made ‘a methodology to collaborate with the more-than-human through environment field recording’ as I have already elaborated in previous blog posts aims to be shared through friends, peers, sent to practitioners who I admire that work in the same realm and ultimately be shared online for anyone to utilise and access. At some point I would also like to contact a publishing agency to help me publish the booklet. As I am considering studying this further in an MA I think I will hold off until I have developed it more to share in a more professional academic sense. Within the MA I would like to explore and develop the methodology so that it is well rounded and more informed.
For the time being as I take a break from the sonic academic world and focus of the physical aspect of working with the land through my hands, I see my work developing slowly overtime to become completely ecologically focused. I don’t know yet what that exactly looks like but all that I do know is I want to keep learning, keep being intrigued and keep questioning.
